Penang Seafood Restaurant @ Aljunied

Last Friday night we decided to try out the Penang Seafood Restaurant near our house, which is nominated for Singapore Food Masters Contest. We arrived at 7.30pm and there was a long queue outside. Luckily, the queue moved quite fast and we were seated after 10 mins.

We ordered 3 dishes: Crown Prince Spicy Mee Hoon (Small), Fried Sotong Salted Egg (Small) and Penang Kway Teow (Medium). 2 of us were super stuffed, we should have ordered the small size Kway Teow. Well, we have eyes that are bigger than our stomach [sigh].

The fried sotong (squid) was served first. It took me by surprise that it was tender, seasoned just right and not so oily. The salted egg sauce was given generously as well. However, my recommendation is that you should try to finish this dish before it gets cold. Once it gets cold, it becomes soggy and more salty. I think their menu offers salted egg prawn and salted egg chicken as well, if you don’t like squid.

The second dish served was Penang Kway Teow. To be honest, it was not fantastic, no where near the authentic Kway Teow I ate in Penang. It lacked seasoning and quite oily, wasn’t worth the calories. The only good thing was that the cockles were clean and fresh.

The last dish was the mee hoon. The prawn was fresh and juicy. As promised by the owner, it wasn’t very spicy, however we felt it was a bit salty. Then I had an idea of mixing the not-enough-seasoning-kway teow with this salty mee hoon to balance the taste. The mixture was quite good haha. I even scraped the left over salted egg sauce and mixed together. I mean, we totally messed up our palate after all these full-of-flavour foods.

I saw two diners next to my table were having the Penang Assam Laksa and it looked quite yummy, maybe a bit spicy ’cause they sweated a lot. Will try and share review next time.

The address of the store is 76 Geylang Lorong 25A Singapore 388258. Nearest MRT Station is Aljunied, the restaurant is within 3 mins walking. Opening Hours are from 11am – 12 midnight (Monday – Sunday & Public Holiday). You can check out their menu from their website.

Have a great meal!

Love, Elsie
